How to Block Instagram & TikTok on iPhone (Without Deleting Them)
You don't want to delete Instagram — your friends, your DMs, your saved recipes live there. You just want it to stop eating two hours of your day. Here's every way to block Instagram and TikTok on iPhone, from free built-in options to the method that actually holds.
Option 1: Delete the apps (the nuclear option)
Works for about four days. Then there's a birthday to post, a DM you need, a link someone sent — and you reinstall. Deleting treats the app as the problem, when the real problem is unconscious opening. You want the app available on purpose, unavailable on autopilot.
Option 2: iPhone Screen Time limits (free, leaky)
Settings → Screen Time → App Limits → add Instagram and TikTok → set a limit. It's free and better than nothing, but it leaks in two places:
- "Ignore Limit" is one tap and becomes muscle memory within days.
- The limit hits after you've already scrolled your allotment on autopilot — it never interrupts the mindless open itself.
Option 3: A mindful app blocker (what actually holds)
A dedicated blocker built on Apple's Screen Time API can pause specific apps system-wide and put real, well-designed friction at the moment of opening. That's the approach Rewired takes — blocking that's strong enough to interrupt autopilot, gentle enough that you won't rip it out.
Set it up in under 2 minutes
- Download Rewired free from the App Store (iOS 17.4+).
- Grant Screen Time permission — Apple's official, privacy-safe API for app blocking. Rewired never sees your accounts or content.
- Select Instagram, TikTok (and any other feed) under Manage Blocked Apps.
- Optionally schedule Daily Rhythm pauses — Late Night, Lunch, Focus hours — for automatic protection.
What happens when you open Instagram now
Instead of the feed, you'll see: "Instagram paused by Rewired. You tried to open Instagram 1 time already today. Open Rewired to breathe, and unpause Instagram." Take a short breathing moment, and if you still want in, Instagram unpauses — DMs, posting, everything intact. The apps stay on your phone. Your accounts stay alive. Only the mindless opens die.
Why the pause beats the wall
Counting unlocks-after-breathing sounds like a loophole, but it's the whole point: the average person opens Instagram dozens of times a day, and almost none of those opens are decisions. When each open costs one calm breath, the automatic ones simply stop happening — while the intentional ones (checking a DM, posting) stay effortless. That's how Rewired users cut screen time up to 42% in a week without deleting a single app.
Privacy note: app blocking happens on-device via Apple's Screen Time framework. Rewired has no ads and never sells your data.
